Martha's Story
'I pay my staff really well, above the award, but my turnover is high.'
Retaining staff is not always about the 'dollars & cents', in fact individual staff are motivated by very different things. It is imperative that business owners and managers understand what motivates their individual staff members or a lot of time and money can be miss directed resulting in no return on investment and ultimately staff turn over. Often business owners and managers reward their staff the way they, themselves would appreciate and this often misses the mark.
Personality profiling is a proven tool that can assist business owners and managers to understand their staff and in turn, what motivates them. At Watts Next we use DISC profiling and sit down with our clients to analyse the results. We never employ a staff member internally without getting them to complete a DISC profile and making sure we understand our potential employee. If you know what drives your employee, you will know how to manage them and ultimately get the best out of them. Many of our clients swear by this process and have turned average employees into high performing loyal assets, by simply understanding their employes and managing them accordingly.
Not all staff respond to increases or above award salary, there are other ways to retain staff, like; provide time off, positive reinforcement, gift vouchers, title change, more responsibility, team activities, autonomy, training and development or a change of management style. Try personality profiling to get a deeper understanding of your team members and you may find that subtle changes in the way you manage them might make all the difference. Good luck and if you would like some assistance with your staff profiling, please let us know.
